NEW ROCHELLE, NY (August 19, 2024) Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco, joins humanitarian organizations and countries around the globe in recognizing World Humanitarian Day. Celebrated every year on Aug. 19, World Humanitarian Day honors the humanitarian efforts worldwide that support people in crisis.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (Aug 12, 2024) Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco, joins humanitarian organizations and countries around the globe in recognizing International Youth Day. Celebrated each year on Aug. 12, International Youth Day was established by the United Nations to raise awareness of issues affecting young people around the world.

Sisters of Christian Charity 175th Anniversary

On August 21, 2024 the Sisters of Christian Charity will celebrate the 175th anniversary of their Founding in Paderborn, Germany.  Mother Pauline von Mallinckrodt, together with three other Sisters, were invested in the parish Church in Paderborn on August 21, 1849.  On this coming anniversary there will be a special Holy Mass celebrated for the occasion in the same Church.   Sisters are arriving from North and South America to join the German Sisters at the celebration.   A new reliquary will be installed in the parish Church near her memorial portrait.

On Sunday, August 4, the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary – Eastern American Area celebrated Sister Fernanda Moreira’s 100th birthday at Marymount Convent in Tarrytown, New York, with a Mass celebrated by Father Senan Taylor, OFM Cap, followed by a birthday toast and festive luncheon in the convent's Scavullo Room.

Sister Meg Earsley took the next step in religious life with the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, renewing her vows on Aug. 2, Feast of the Portiuncula. Sister Meg joined FSPA in 2018, entered the novitiate stage in 2019 and professed first vows in 2021. Her renewal marks a step toward professing final vows with the congregation.

At the intersection of forced migration and human trafficking

Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration Eileen McKenzie recently found herself sharing a story with an audience of influence: members of the United States Congress.

The account is true for uncounted people in migration who seek asylum in the United States. Many, instead of entering into safety and opportunity, find themselves at the intersection of migration and human trafficking.

Honoring sacred tradition: perpetual adoration at 146 years

On Aug. 1, the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration gathered in Mary of the Angels Chapel to celebrate 146 years of perpetual adoration, our sacred tradition that started in 1878. Sister Joanne Moeller read from “A Chapter of Franciscan History,” written by Sister Mileta Ludwig explaining the scene from the day adoration began. “...Aug. 1, 1878 was to mark the date of the most significant religious event in the history of the congregation. No effort was spared in making preparations.

Franciscan Sisters to Celebrate 800th Anniversary of the Stigmata of St. Francis

September 15, 2024, at 4:00 p.m.

Through meditation and song, the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Frankfort, Illinois, will celebrate the 800th Anniversary of the Stigmata of St. Francis of Assisi on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. The celebration will be held in Queen of Angels Chapel at the motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters, 9201 W St. Francis Road. Those attending are welcome to stroll the grounds of St. Francis Woods before or after this free event. No registration is necessary.

Sisters accompany people in migration at the U.S. southern border

September and October, 2024

Catholic sisters walk with people in migration all over the world. We accompany people at the Nogales, Arizona / Mexico border by meeeting their basic needs, listening and advocating for their rights. We invite sisters to accompany us in a special month-long program that takes place 4 times a year: March, April, September and October.  This program, Catholic Sisters Walking with Migrants, is sponsored by the Kino Border Initiative and funded through the Hilton foundation.

WORLD DAY AGAINST TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS: Salesian programs combat trafficking through education

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (July 30, 2024) Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco, joins humanitarian organizations and countries around the globe in recognizing World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. In 2013, United Nations member states adopted a resolution that designated July 30 as the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. The day aims to raise awareness about the victims of human trafficking and promote and protect their rights.

GHANA: Pastoral work and social programs supported by Salesian Missions

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (July 23, 2024) Top of Form Salesians in Ghana had the support they need to facilitate pastoral work and social programs thanks to donor funding from Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco. The St. Joseph Province in Ashaiman received funding to purchase a car so that Salesians could travel among the Salesian centers in Ghana, Togo, Liberia, Sierra Leone and the Ivory Coast.

Hiroshima-Nagasaki Virtual Prayer Service

On August 6, 2024, women religious across the country will join in a virtual prayer service to commemorate the tragic events of August 6 and 9, 1945, when the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. The event is being organized by the Franciscan Peace Center, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis, Clinton, Iowa on the anniversary of these bombings that resulted in the deaths of over 200,000 people and marks a somber chapter in human history.

In 60 containers at St. Rome of Lima Parish, Massapequa, NY, green plants are bursting forth such as bush beans and basil; peppers and parsley! The garden was started under the leadership of Amityville Dominican Sister Carol Radosti, who is the Co-Coordinator of the Parish Social Ministry.

The succulent staples of fresh food grown on parish grounds supplement the other supplies offered at the St. Rose of Lima Outreach Center.

Clinton Franciscans Celebrate Jubilees

July 2024

Clinton, IA – Six Clinton Franciscan Sisters will celebrate their Jubilee, the anniversary of their entrance into religious life, this July. Sisters Ruth Cox, Teresa Kunkel, Joan Theiss, Mary Lou Carlson, Gael Gensler, and Jacqueline Herrmann have a combined 390 years of service to God’s people.

Jubilee Mass will be held Saturday, July 27, at 10:30 a.m. at Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Clinton with Father Michael Schaab of the Diocese of Peoria presiding. The public is welcome to attend. A private luncheon will follow.

The Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart, Frankfort, Illinois, installed a new leadership team this June. Called to serve and pictured are (l-r): Sr. Lovina Francis Pammit, 3rd Councilor; Sr. Iaci Araujo de Miranda, 4th Councilor; Sr. Mary Elizabeth Imler, General Community Leader; Sr. Genevieve Raupp, 2nd Councilor; and Sr. Christina Fuller, Vicaress.

The newly elected team is responsible for fulfilling the 2024-2029 Mandatum, which applies to both our Sisters in the United States and Brazil:

The Clare Award is given to honor a woman who exemplifies the characteristics of St. Clare and the values of the Clinton Franciscans: to live and promote active nonviolence, pursuing peace with justice in right relationship with all of creation.
